About Medusa Rising
We are a small, international team of women dedicated to supporting women in resistance and increasing women's thriving through both political and cultural work. We do Radical Materialist Feminist (#radmatfem), developed by THE RADICAL NOTION Collective. We mean to build a way through to a feminist future by amplifying women's visions for that future, facilitating coalition building among feminists globally, and supporting ideas often disenfranchised in mainstream feminism. The analysis is on-going as patriarchy interates its patterns, but we want to build out, away, forward, for real by creating parallel systems on feminist terms. Our mission emphasizes welcome, joy, and deep witness as essential to this world-building effort. We are committed to moving out of patriarchy, which we view as the original dominance hierarchy modified over time to produce all the other forms of dominance.
The Role
We are looking for a skilled, female, feminist Volunteer Social Media Manager. I (Esmée) am not great at this, and so small a collective needs a big presence to meet our mission. This role is crucial for amplifying our message across digital platforms, and involves working closely with me to develop strategies for driving engagement and subscriptions to our newsletter and podcast.
All the Gorgon's are encouraged to write or share their own work with Medusa Rising and to join or host the Gorgon Posse Podcast as they feel interested and able. We work around everyone's schedules and projects when given clear notice well in advance.
Key Responsibilities
We really need to drive engagement and subscription. I don't want women giving work away for free, neither the team nor our contributors. For one thing, free labor limits participation to women who can afford free time. And that limit also influences the views and voices making decisions. For another, more feminists like our contributors deserve readers, viewers, and listeners. We need to strike a balance between a give-it-away grassroots approach and something more capitalist. Our social goal is to foster deeper understanding of radical materialist feminism, our movement goal is to increase coalitions across difference, and our financial goal to make enough profit (after overhead and contributor payments) to pay the Gorgons some walking around money.
The Usual
- Develop and implement social media content calendars across key platforms including Instagram, Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Threads, and Bluesky. – If you have an interest in helping us use TicTok or Skylight, that's awesome!
- Create engaging social media posts that include snippets of articles, striking quotes, thought-provoking questions, and behind-the-scenes content including voice or video clips. – We're looking for charisma.
- Promote Medusa Rising's unique content, highlighting deep dives into feminist theory, women's poetry and literature, discussions on current events from a feminist lens, and personal essays. – You have an opportunity to fully represent this org.
- Amplify podcast episodes from the Gorgon Posse of Medusa Rising.
Vital to Us
- Promote sister projects and other feminist projects to help organically build deeper global coalitions among feminist groups and organizations as directed or in consultation with Esmée.
- Utilize relevant hashtags such as #WorldBuildingWomen & #MedusaRising #FeministVoices, #radfem, #WomensPoetry, #Feminism, #WomensRights, and #GlobalFeminism, #WomensArt. And then also hashtags attached to movements compatible to ours like #3E, #Thrutopia, and #StopTrafficking, #MVAWG, #EndImpunity, #EndAutoGenocide, #BindingChaos, etc to expand reach. – We'll talk.
- Community Engagement:
- Actively engage with comments and messages across all platforms, fostering discussion and building a vibrant online community.
- BlueSky & Threads require more commenting on related posts from other accounts to pique interest.
- Encourage user-generated content (both online and as submissions to the newsletter) and attendance to any public online events.
- (A Hope) Participate in relevant online forums and communities (e.g., Reddit, Clovenhooves, Facebook groups) to share Medusa Rising content where appropriate. – We'll talk. I can see how this could be very time consuming.
- Actively engage with comments and messages across all platforms, fostering discussion and building a vibrant online community.
- Content Promotion & Messaging:
- Tailor content to resonate with our target audience: intellectually curious women passionate about radical feminist theory and activism, who have some background in feminist thought and wish to put words into action.
- Showcase the diverse range of topics Medusa Rising covers, including lesbian life, feminist history, feminist futures; critiques of economic systems, transhumanism, sex/gender/identity; violence against women, care economies, women's health, and the impact of climate change on women. Among others!
- Amplify connections among feminist groups and coalitional work.
- Collaboration:
- Work collaboratively with the international team of Gorgons, who are committed to a collaborative ethos where everyone reviews, edits, and supports movement-building and outreach efforts.
- Meet regularly with Esmee to discuss strategy and do quick approvals on tranches of content.
Qualifications
- Good understanding of the Radical Materialist Feminist framework and Medusa Rising's mission (see mission and manifesto on the website).
- Excellent written communication skills with the ability to adapt tone for different platforms (we prefer a casual, clever, and human voice, welcoming jokes, puns, sarcasm, unvarnished truths, rage, and well-polished cursing).
- Familiarity with digital marketing principles and strategies (including content marketing, social media engagement, and community building).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a small, international, collaborative team.
- Creativity and initiative in generating ideas for engaging social media content, a willingness to experiment and learn in public.
Time Commitment & Logistics
This is a remote, volunteer position. The time commitment is flexible but consistent, effective engagement is needed to mainntain a vibrant online presence. We are in early and developmental stage with regard to our social media, and in the first year of our work as an organization. We publish a maximum of 8 content posts per month, including any voice/video podcast episodes. We do not need to grow very quickly, but we do need to grow. We expect applicants to have a clear idea of how much time they can give and to work efficiently in that time. We value effective work over volume of work.
Organization
- Medusa Rising is not a horizontal collective. Final decisions, publications, and organizational direction rest with me, Esmée, because as the owner/operator I'm the one who can be sued.
- We hunt as a pack. That is, we stay in touch while operating independently, support each other in the work (and in life) with aligned goals, but the pack has a leader. All final decisions rest with Esmée as owner and operator of Medusa Rising.
- Each of us has our role and areas of expertise and are expected to bring them to the table generously and cooperatively. We share in planning, editing, and outreach, and all have access to relevant documents to keep us in the flow together. We consult monthly in a formal meeting about management and content directions, update on longer-term projects, and address issues or complications. We consult informally as needed to dream or problem-solve.
- For now, we're all working for free. We are just bringing income enough to cover costs. Once we bring in enough profit to pay all the Gorgons, we will split those profits evenly or by agreement each quarter (could be $5, could be $500, we will see).
How to Apply If you want to build worlds with women and can contribute your social media expertise to Medusa Rising, please send a brief expression of interest and any relevant experience to info@medusariging.org. Please use the subject line: SocMed Application.
